CRAFT & COASTAL: THE POWER OF MAKING

06.29.2022

In spite of recent storms that produced unprecedented flooding and damaging high-winds here, we've stayed to just keeping doing what we love best: making our heritage-inspired handmade, chunky, double-weight blankets... with love.

Why we needed to stay with our craft

Knitting is the best healer for all my troubles in life. I doubt there is another activity that can help one forget all the troubles and problems, and just focus on what you are doing. At least that is my experience. Knitting has always been my go-to activity whenever I needed to relax, calm down and get back to being productive. In this modern world we live in, there are so many distractions. It's really hard to focus on one thing for long periods of time, so I turn to something that has never let me down yet.

Tough times develop our focus

What I've learned over the years, is that in times of crisis, the best thing you can do is to keep your head up, keep your chin up and keep on going. It's not easy after Co-vid, and lock-downs, not to mention the regular challenges of life, but we really have no choice except to cope with it. We need to pick ourselves up and start living again! If we are creative, productive, and show people that there is still hope for the future, then we are also showcasing leadership. That will inspire other people and help build a brighter tomorrow. That's what it means to me to keep on knitting.

How to turn your crafting into a potential business

It's always best to start small when you are planning to make a business out of your hobby. Learn to make your craft as lovely as pleases you. You can also offer something extra, something new and different. People will love the change. Once you're done with that, it's time to share your work and get feedback. It's all about learning from people who have been doing this for a long time, so listen carefully and take the criticism in stride. As long as it is well-meaning and from someone who genuinely cares about helping you improve, then it is worth listening to and heeding their advice. Keep crafting away and enjoy the experience!

Many people are in need of a little extra warmth and love
Do you know the power of a gift? I do, because I've seen it first hand. Whenever it gets especially tough out there, people are in need of a little extra warmth and love. When people have less, they have so much more to give. That's why it's so important to throw yourself into helping others whenever possible. Who knows how your seemingly small act of kindness will bring about positive change for someone in need? There is undoubtedly an audience for your craft no matter what you do. You just have to be willing to go out there and share your talent with the world. The world needs you when things look bleak. It needs you when times get tough.

Takeaway:
It is easy to take the opportunity to do something we love when life presents us obstacles.

I don’t know what it is about knitting, but it just makes me feel all warm and cozy. From the softness of the yarn between my fingers to the way a well-crafted blanket feels and looks when done, there’s something very soothing about creating and sharing handmade blankets. Maybe it’s because the process takes time…and in our modern world, it seems like we are always rushing from one thing to another these days. For me, nothing is quite so therapeutic as sitting down with a nice cup of coffee and a good book while I craft away on something beautiful.
